To help encourage conversations and dialogue about resolutions and reflection as we begin 2017, our topic/question for the dinner table is: Please complete this statement: This year I am committed to these 1-2 resolutions... Resolutions (Week of 1/1/17) (This is an anonymous Google Form)
Happy New Year! We enjoyed a nice vacation as a family and I hope everyone was able to find some time to decompress, read, relax, and have fun. As many of you know down time can be a challenge for me (intellectually understanding the need to separate/relax but being challenged by the reality of putting it into practice) and with this in mind, enhancing my own understanding of self is at the top of the list for my resolutions for the new year! With the transition from 2016 to 2017 now realized, I am continuing the tradition of sharing some 'end-of-year' posts/lists/predictions that I have enjoyed and hope you will as well...

7 Media Resolutions Every Family Should Make in 2017
by Caroline Knorr in Common Sense Media
As we all wrestle with the pros and cons of technology for both personal and professional (educational) use, Knorr provides some tangible pieces of advice for families. As with Knorr's post last year, Katie and I will be taking a close look at the list with our children.
Working out and eating right are at the top of most people's New Year's resolutions. But as tough as those are, nothing compares with the challenge of a healthy media diet.
It won't always be easy to make your media resolutions stick. Especially because we parents tend to gobble up as much screen time as our kids. Unlike those midnight-snack runs after the kids go to bed, however, your media habits are being recorded by tiny ears and eyes. But we're all in this together: This fun, crazy, innovative, challenging media environment affects us all. So whether you're turning over a new leaf or trying to stay the course, our 2017 media resolutions can help you be more mindful, focus on what's most important, get the most out of media and technology, and raise good digital citizens.
To My 13-Year-Old, An iPhone Contract From Your Mom, With Love and To My 13-Year-Old, An iPhone Contract From Your Mom, With Love
by Janell Burley Hoffman in The Huffington Post
I share these posts each year and I find it resonates each time I come back to it. # 18 is wonderful - 'You will mess up. I will take away your phone. We will sit down and talk about it. We will start over again. You and I, we are always learning. I am on your team. We are in this together.'
I look forward to sharing resolutions and some more reflections next week, but for now I hope you can ease back in to the routines of school while trying to hold on to the spirit of vacation! Each year Larry Ferlazzo shares Bill Ivey's words and I believe they are worth sharing as well - holding on to optimism, gratitude, and recognition for our students, educators, and community:
Each and every school day will bring tens of thousands of reasons to celebrate in schools across the country. - Bill Ivey
I look forward to the work that lies ahead for all of us.
