Memorial Day
In honor of Memorial Day and in an effort to help raise money for our very own Vietnam War Memorial at Blake, Student Council will be hosting a fundraiser on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 and Thursday, May 31, 2012. Red, white, and blue silicone bracelets with the words "Build Blake's Memorial" will be sold that Wednesday and Thursday morning. They cost $2.00, and 100% of the profits will be donated directly to the construction of a Vietnam War Memorial at Blake Middle School. Join us in our efforts to recognize and honor those who served to preserve our freedom!
Exciting Blake Summer Reading Incentives
As if reading all of the great books on our lists is not enough, our new incentives now provide even more of a reason to read this summer. All students are required to read the all-school book, one grade-level required book, and one optional book. Beyond those, here's what we offer:
Best Buy $50 Gift Card Drawing: For every book read over the required three, up to a maximum of 17 books, students will get their names on a ticket for grade-level drawings for a $50 Best Buy Gift Card (separate card for each grade). The more you read, the better your odds!
Pizza Party/Park Street Books Trip: Read 20 books (the all school, 1 required grade level, and 18 from the grade-level optional list) and you get to take part in a pizza party followed by a trip to Park Street Books, where you may pick out a free book! Your name will also appear on 17 tickets for the Best Buy drawing!
Please refer to the Forms and Documents tab for copies of the 6th-8th grade reading lists for this summer. If you have any questions, please contact Jon Haycock at [email protected].
Blake Art Show
It has been an active year in the Fine Arts Department at Blake Middle School. Many have been keeping track of our student artwork by visiting our website (http://www.medfieldk12finearts.net), or following us on our Twitter (@Medfieldk12Arts) and/or Facebook Page (Medfield K-12 Fine Arts) accounts.
But if you really want to see what has been going on all year in the Art rooms, you're going to have to come to our Blake Middle School Annual Art Show. This year the Art Show will be up for viewing Tuesday, May 29th - Friday, June 1st in the Blake LMC and Principal's Hallway. Our Artists' Reception will be held the evening of Tuesday, May 29th from 6:00-7:30.
Please mark your calendars, so you don't miss the opportunity to view the show. Our students have done such a remarkable job in their Art classes, and we are sure you will agree!
Gettysburg Address Contest Winner
Every year the town of Medfield celebrates Memorial Day with a parade and a ceremony to honor those that have given their lives while serving in the military in the center of town. Each year a 7th grader from Blake plays a major role by reading the Gettysburg Address at the event. Competition for the event is stiff as students try to earn a spot to represent the grade at the ceremony. Interested competitors are asked to memorize the first half of the Address and deliver it to the three social studies teachers. They are judged on the delivery of the message, the clarity of ther voice, the volume of their presentation, and the connection they make with the judges. This year, Liam Dewey, has won the honor of representing the 7th grade and delivering Lincoln's famous speech at the Memorial Day Ceremony. The parade will begin at 9:45 with the ceremony at Veterans Park to follow.
